What are you listening to, Langhorne?

Jonas

I´ve loved Langhorne Slim, or Sean Scolnick if you will, since the first day I heard him sing. It´s something about him. Something wonderful and unique. One day I will shake his hand and buy him a cold one. That is a promise.

His last album hit the scene 2009, and instantly became my #1 album of the year. Since then this 30 year old folkrocker from Langhorne, Pennsylvania has been on stage. On every road, as Mark Knopfler said. He is wandering the soil of America and you can hear it in his voice.

Kentuckyseven is proud to present a smalltalk (a WAYLT) with Slim. Check out his next gig = Jan 19 Belly Up Tavern CA, Jan 20 Galaxy Concert Theatre CA, Jan 21 The Music Box CA, Jan 22 The Fillmore CA.

And let´s give him a hrmph for admiring the K7-darling book.

Langhorne, what are you listening to right now?

”Bill Withers Live at Carnegie Hall.  It is amazing!”

Best book read during 2010?
”The Master and Margarita.”

Who deserves a breakthru in 2011?
”We are currently on tour with an artist from Scotland named Ryan Lauder and we love him.  Check him out!!”

Have you met… Everest?

Magnus

In 2007 the band Everest saw the light of day. The band is Russell Pollard (vocals, guitar, drums, lyricist), Jason Soda (guitar, keys, vocals), Joel Graves (guitar, keys, vocals), Elijah Thomson (bass, vocals) and Davey Latter (drums, percussion).

The debut with the haunting name ”Ghost Notes” came out in 2008 and was warmly welcomed into the musicworld. Their ”Californian Country-Rock” makes a noticeable mark in the sound-scape of great music. The sophomore album ”On Approach” was released in may 2010.

From ”On Approach” comes our song of the day – ”Let Go”… listen in on the great sound of Everest.

The Secret Sisters

Jonas

From Alabama, let´s hear it for Lydia and Laura Rodgers. Two sisters of mercy, made a debutrecord of oldschool music in a vibrant mood.

The Secret Sisters, maybe not a secret any more, makes me wanna go back to a time of americana heartland, a time before country music, a time of sweet potatoes and apple pie.

They made their 11-song debut on Belaroit/Universal Music, released by the awesome T Bone Burnett, and hitting Kentuckyseven´s soft spot.

The sisters have shared stage with Jack White and Elvis Costello. Coming up is the European tour, kicking of Feb 16th, and yes – they play with the almighty Ray LaMontagne.

¤ Next gig: Tonite Jan 14th on Higher Ground in South Burlington, tomorrow  Jan 15th Bowery Ballroom in NYC.

Review: Heidi Spencer and The Rare Birds – Under Streetlight Glow

Jonas

Heidi Spencer And The Rare Birds – Under Streetlight Glow

Bella Union. Releasedate 2011-01-17.

The record begins. I´m letting Heidi Spencer enter my atmosphere. She sings, with her battered, mistreated, cruel, hurting, fetching, blinding voice.

”No one need to know

We laid around all day

Let´s make up a good – alibi

Let´s take it to the grave

Take it to the moon.”

Well, Heidi had me at hello. This is a sad record, yet heartwarming. It´s like a wind that carries you on. To the next place, maybe even a better one.

It´s haunting music that keeps rolling in. The Rare Birds make a perfect terrain to Heidi´s voice. It´s all about the voice. It´s there when the drugs won´t work.

This is Heidi Spencer´s third album. It´s her first on the great indie label Bella Union (Low Anthem, Midlake, Beach House). It will make the difference. It will take this Milwaukeegirl for a ride into the charts, well deserved.

Heidi Spencer remindes me of Emmylou Harris, Tracy Chapman, Tom Petty. Whatever. She´s made a perfect soundtrack to a rainy Sunday.

I´m listening to the gutting #3 track Moth Met Spider. In the words of Kurt Vonnegut; So it goes.

¤ Judge says: 6/7 Kentuckyseven´s.

¤ Best Track: Alibi

¤ Drink while you listen: Whiskey, no rocks.

¤ Check it out: Heidi on Spotify, Heidi on Myspace.

Treefight for Sunlight…

Magnus

Photo: Søren Rye

Treefight for Sunlight is the band to pay close attention to in 2011. With their selftitled debut coming out february 14 they will take off into the treetops.

The band was named New Band of the Day by The Guardian.co.uk and my guess is they will be a lot of magazines band of the year, come december of 2011.

Born in Denmark are the four extraordinary musicians Mathias Sørensen (drums, vocals), Morten Winther Nielsen (guitar, vocals), Christian Rohde Lindinger (bass, vocals), Niels Kirk (piano, vocals) and the music they are creating  smells and feels new but has a delicate taste of the 60’s and 70’s. Harmonies and vocals that reminds you of golden days. Beautiful stuff.

One of my favorite tunes from the upcoming album is up for listening by the courtesy of Bella Union, listen and enjoy:

The smell of beard

Jonas

Grand Rapid´s singersongwriter Nathan Kalish made a beautiful soloalbum last year. We found it in our backviewmirror and it appears bigger than most other stuff. Away from his regular Wildfireband, Kalish has made nine songs in true K7-spirit. It smells of bearded men & Makers Mark, country & western. An honest tale.

Delicate Veins (released on Caveman Records) got the rootsy Michigan Women “Hey pretty lady, won’t you keep me warm/through the Michigan winters of my soul”, the introsong The Morning “I like to see it in the morning, when the earth still feels new, and the grass still has dew” and the epic All my life with that chillin disted guitar.

Next gig? Nathan Kalish and the Wildfire, Fri 14th, @ Jukes, Grand Rapids, MI.

Review: Tu Fawning – Hearts On Hold

Magnus

Tu Fawning – Hearts On Hold

City Slang Records
Releasedate 2010-01-10

Out of the awsome City Slang comes, like a fearful bat out of its cave, Tu Fawning’s first full length album.

To put in words what the sound of Tu Fawning sounds like, is like trying to throw out the christmas tree without having the floor filled with needles.

Hearts On Hold is an album that will keep you guessing. You will have nightmares,  feel bliss or just disappear into the world that is theirs. The instruments, samples and vocals together blends up to something never  experienced before. I got completely lost in the trumpet. There is some sense of Arcade Fireish notions hidden somewhere.

I have listened to the album a numerous times, and still it gets me. Confusing, beautiful and simple at times. It is like nothing you??’ve heard before, and still it feels somewhat like home at times.

The first track on the album will take you somewhere, thats guaranteed, just try to find out where. It’s amazing. If I ever die in New Orleans, give me a funeralband, marching and put Tu Fawning in the first line. Singing ”Multiply A House”

Hearts On Hold makes up for a strong 5/7 – Try it on, see if it fits you.
