Review: Mechanical Bride – Living With Ants

Magnus

Release date: 2011-06-06
Label: Transgressive Records

Lauren Doss, a 25-year-old songwriter, self taught, super talented is really something else. When I stumbled upon the record I did not know what to expect. At all.

Admitting that I do have a soft spot for great female voices, this made me very surprised and excited. The record makes the listener unpatient. What will next song sound like. I need this kind of music in my life. We all do sometimes.

Living With Ants is not just another record. This is great, in all ways thinkable. There are some great connections in the lyrics, to the sound. Like great conversations, inside of the, what I imagine, great writers-mind of Lauren Doss and her friends in Mechanical Bride.

I picture the band in an intimate setting, playing all-acoustic with a completely silent audience baffled in front of them. Wish I could be one in that crowd.

Five 7’s is a bit cheap, but I know that Mechanical Bride is going to greater stuff further down the road.

Unsigned: Penny Blacks

Jonas

Penny Blacks is the songwriting vehicle of Jason Ogden. Penny Black is also a stamp, the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, but thats another story.

It´s the folky vibe we love and very Canadian (Great Lake Swimmers, Wolf Parade). It´s something special with the big tree-filled country. A lo-fi Swedish touch jammed with an country & western twang. Jason Ogden is from New Brunswick, a frenchy southeast part of Canada that borders to the Stephen King state of Maine.

Penny Blacks is something very special. Something you wanna put in a box and mail to your best friend. Something you wanna keep as a secret – as your own – but also scream out on the top of your lungs to the rest of the world. This is sincere and for real and a force to reckon with. I´m pretty blown away.

Seven Q´s to Martin Rossiter

Jonas

The man is back after a seven-year-break from the musicscene. It´s his first Swedengig in 14 years, exclusive at the grand piano. Yeah – we´re excited.

Martin Rossiter (ex Gene) gigs Gothenburg May 29 at Park Live, Sankt Jörgen Resort. Kentuckyseven got a interview with Mr Rossiter, enjoy!

1. Your old band Gene (1993-2004) sold 2 million records and had 10 UK top-40 singles. How to summarize that time in your life?

”To be honest most of it is a blur, I look back and wonder who the man is who looks like me and sings like me but doesn’t feel like me. If you see him let him know I want a word.”

2. You live in Brighton, how´s the southcoast musicscene right now?

”I’ve never really involved myself in any scene. Scene’s tend not to like me and the feeling is mutual. You’d be better off asking someone young with ’interesting’ hair.”

3. We are really excited by your solodebut, the song Drop Anchor is really beautiful. What can you tell us bout the song?

”If a few people fall in love to it I’ll be happy. It is important as it was the first new song that people have heard and despite sometimes having an ego the size of Gothenburg, I confess to having been a touch nervous that the response would be ’it’s ok Martin but when are you going to play Fighting Fit’. Thankfully it wasn’t.”

4. You´re on tour for the first time in 7 years. Frightened?

”Absolutely not. Why would I be?”

5. You hit Gothenburg May 29, your first Swedengig in 14 years. What can the audience expect?

”Songs, songs and songs. Call me a luddite but I still think the song has more power than any other art form.”

6. Could you recommend some new music to our readers?

”There is such a paucity of new talent it’s hard to think of anything but I am very partial to Villagers and the James Blake album is interesting.”

7. Finally, please mention three artists that inspire you?

”Dolly Parton, Billy Bragg and Sophie Pointer.”

¤¤¤Please check out Martin´s new and brilliant song ’Drop Anchor’.

Review: My Morning Jacket – Circuital

Jonas

Label: V2

Releasedate: June 6 2011

¤¤¤ Circuital is My Morning Jackets 6th studioalbum. The titlesong, and the album as a whole, is all about coming home.

The band with singer Jim James as the leader of the pack, got back to the homestate of Kentucky and made this one. Good move, it´s their best record so far.

Circuital was recorded in the gymnasium of a Louisville church under the aegis of producer Tucker Martine (Spoon, Decemberists). Converting the gymnasium into a recording studio must have been a pain, but it paid off. The album is recorded live, with James vocals recorded at the same time as the band´s performance.

First and foremost, this is an album. A unit of songs that belong together and need each other, a solidarity, a scarce item in the world of music today. I kneel to the power of these 10 songs. Together they break down walls.

In my mind My Morning Jacket is one of the world’s greatest rock n roll bands. They got their own thing going. You can only compare them to themselves. It´s like listening to a good friend, someone you don´t ever want to shut up. It´s like having drinks without the hangover.

Kentuckyseven (of course) loves Kentucky. My Morning Jacket is a great ambassador of the Kentuckian gospel. Long live the bluegrass state.

On #9 Slow Slow Tune I get a feeling of a high-school-prom. Standing next to a beautiful girl, or just a girl, hands sweating, guts disappearing, life pumping thru the veins. Feelings.

This is a classic record, don´t miss it.

¤¤¤ 6/7 Kentuckyseven´s

¤¤¤ Drink while listen: Bourbon

¤¤¤ Best songs: Circuital, Wonderful (The Way I Feel), Holdin’ On To Black Metal.

A club statement

Jonas

In the words of Heidi Pickup.

To City fans everywhere this is what we have been wanting for a long, long time. The FA Cup may have lost its appeal in these days of multi millionaire players, managers and club owners and an international TV-driven audience. But it hasn’t for the true fans – and this is why Saturday 14th May 2011 will live long in the memory for us all and signals a new era in the history of MCFC.

Josh McBride…

Magnus

The Seattle-favorites ”The Head & The Heart” made an exclusive performance for MTV Hive in Austin TX. Hear the band talk about playing music, for real, for real people.

As a bonus, they played a new song, ”Josh McBride”. Looks like they’ve hit the right notes, once again.
