One of the best albums of 2011 is My Morning Jackets ’Circuital’. This darling rockband is touring the shit out of it as we speak. Sat 16 th July they gig Latitude Festival and Sun 17 July the gig Somerset House w awesome support of The Head And The Heart.
Kentuckyseven got a minute with mighty drummer Patrick Hallahan, do check it out.
¤ Circuital was recorded in Kentucky, your home-state. Was that special to you?
”Recording an album is always a special time for us, but recording at home took it to another level. There’s just a certain comfort when at home…a centering element. And because of this, we didn’t have to focus on our surrounds, just the music.”
¤ How is the music-scene in Kentucky today?
”The music scene in Kentucky is complicated. On one hand, you have the mindset that musicians should maintain the traditional bluegrass roots. On the other hand, you have people wanting to invent. We like to invent…”
¤ We´d love to go to Kentucky and listen to live music. Where to go?
”Renfro Valley.”
¤ Your hopes for 2011?
”Have a healthy baby. Play as many shows with my friends as possible. Make more time for my family. Give back to the universe for all of this positive energy.”
¤ Kentuckyseven loves the new album, how do you guys rate it?
”Too close to the fire…I’ll leave the rating to you. Rest assured, we’re really happy with how things turned out.”
¤ What books or records did inspire you in the making of Circuital?
”Circuital was inspired by life lessons, personal growth, and realization. There are no direct connections to books or records…they are two of many things that shaped our minds leading up to this point.”
I would guess that this is not the last time we come across a great band from Rhode Island. Deer Tick, The Low Anthem and a whole bunch of them springing from a what seems to be a well with no bottom.
Brad and Andrew Barr is no exception, The Barr Brothers have been making music, or fighting their entire lives. And you can tell. This is genuine and pure love. A love for the music.
The Barr Brothers just signed with Secret City Records. Home of such great artists and bands as Patrick Watson & the Wooden Arms, Plants and Animals, Miracle Fortress, Basia Bulat and more. They should feel right at home.
The self-titled album will be released september 27th. I think you want to check that out. Meanwhile, listen to Beggar in the Morning. Sweet sweet stuff. From Providence… The Barr Brothers – Beggar in the Morning by SecretCityRecords
The acclaimed brooklyn-based indie-trio The Drums has announced the release of their sophomore album. The band, made a sweet debut last year with their self-titled album, sold a shitload of albums and toured the globe.
The new album will appear very up close and personal. as Jonny Pierce describes it ”This new album touches everything from my extreme religious roots to transgenderism to violence, and of course there is plenty of heartbreak stuff, wich I couldn’t get away from even if I tried”
The first single ”Money” will be released September 5th, the album September 12th via Moshi Moshi / Cooperative Music. Listen to ”Money”, below…
I Break Horses is formed by Maria Lindén and Fredrik Balck, from the capitol of Sweden. Not your average shoegazers, this is something larger. The music is ambient, mythical and makes you want to just open up your windows and let it fly away.
Their first video Hearts is spectacular, it is like being on a journey, without an end. Check it.
John Blaze is a 20 year old guy from San Francisco who recently released his debut full length ’Album Three’. In his own words it´s ”lo-fi electrocoustic bedroom music” and hits the ground close to Avey Tare, Beach Boys and Atlas Sound. It´s bigrange, no limit and very, very interesting.
I love this guy and can see him hitting it big time. Check out his great song, ’Babys Got Her Blue Jeans On’ and rest assured; Kentuckyseven will be checking up on this dude in the future.
With all that shit going on in the world, it is soothing to find bands that will get your hopes up again. The Alternates, a band from L.A. just made my day, a little brighter.
Sounding like a band, really in love with what they are doing, and with a vocalist, that reminds me of Mr Vedder, when he was at his best, they have great things ahead.
Their EP Spiders and Webs, released on Luxury Wafers. is a complete compilation of sweet music. Indie-Rock at the tip of super greatness. I see only greater music coming up ahead from these guys. Currently touring the US, we at Kentuckyseven can only write them down on our wish-list for an European visit.
Take a listen at the great sounds of The Alternates:
A month and a half to go. Then Way Out West will finally kick off in Slottsskogen, Gothenburg, Sweden. This will be the festival to look up this summer.
The starting XI is – as always – great with big-stuff-headliners mixed with folk-rock-gems. And the signing of Swedish Godfather Joakim Thåström – his only gig of 2011 – makes us @ Kentuckyseven go hmpfh.
Check out this great b-side-take of his 2005-song ’Fan Fan Fan’ recorded 03.00, alone in the studio. Pretty stunning.
This new LA-band blew my mind a couple of weeks ago. I first heard them thanks to their vid-maker Jimmy, who sent me one of their songs; I Was A Child. Intense, brutal and beautiful all at once
I don´t know shit about Burial at Sea. But I know what I hear, and I definately know what I like. This is some important piece of music. Here´s the song Heartless Lover.
Trevor Moss and his lawfully wedded wife Hannah Lou bring us a folky piece of record that is pretty much up our devoted Kentuckyseven-alley.
These Londoners made a choice and left the city, moved to the southeast of England and into a 14th century pub where they live and recorded this sweet piece of music.
My personal fav is the awesome Charlie Parr-cover Cheap Wine. Trevor Moss does this in an uptempo-feetstompin-beautiful-version that makes me wanna embrace this world we wander.
QFL&F is an old-fashioned album. Something to ponder, something that will sink in. It is also a sweet summer-record to enjoy with family and friends. Life doesn´t have to be harder than this. We dig.
