• Noah Gundersen from Seattle, Washington, is a bad ass singer songwriter with his heart on his sleeve. Ledges is his full-length debut, released 2014. Powerful and glorious in it’s raw cooked-down way. Upsettingly good.
It starts off with the gospel greatness Poor Man’s Son and then keep tumblin’ down blocks from the boulder. A soul searcher of a record, no doubt.
• Dinner Belles from Southern Ontario formed as a family of friends over a mutual love of folk, roots, rock and roll and country music.
The 7-member band are known for their infectious live performance, listen to their new album – out Oct 28th on Sonic Unyon – and you’ll get the drift.
This is Americana greatness straight outta the barn, making us shiver and shake down to the bone. Check out the awesome title track The River and The Willow.
• LA-singer songwriter Derek Thomas just got back from a month-long tour of Nicaragua and Costa Rica performing at restaurants, hotels and hostels. To finance his travels he is currently promoting his newest 13-track full-length album Beyond The Trestles.
The man is on top of the LA-scene and we for sure gonna keep tabs on Mr Thomas. The vibe and the feeling is there, it’s Americana greatness with a soul-surf touch. Don’t miss his awesome tune Honey Whiskey.
Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys is, as we all know, a genius when it comes to creating great sounds and music.
Being a producer, musician or just being there when recording, it turns to gold. As in this case. Auerbach has produced Nikki Lane’s latest album (released in may this year) All or Nothin’, a country-rock-stomping-blues-album by outlaw-singer Lane, that carries it all on her shoulders.
Listen to her telling you that it is all or nothin’ or listen to her duet with Dan, Love’s on Fire. Magic stuff.
• Cancer is a danish duo with a hurtful, vibrant Antony and the Johnsons kind of swing. It´s haunting stuff from the bottom of the darkest well. Cancer is Nikolaj Manuel Vonsild and Kristian Finne Kristensen. Check out their epic song Same Color As Digital Photography.
• We love War On Drugs. Well, Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon) don´t. The WOD played high n’ loud next to the man on a gig the other night and he promised to write a song called ”War On Drugs Can Suck My Cock”. Well, he did. Pretty damn good too – in its passive-aggressive splendor.
I’m Kingfisher – Avian
Released 2014-09-17 (Kite/Playground)
Kentuckyseven has many favorites. It kind of comes with the trade somehow. You fall in love with the albums and tracks that you write about and consume.
There is somehow some artists that clings to your heart a bit tighter. One of them is I’m Kingfisher. Mr Thomas Jonsson from Sweden. His new album, his fifth, Avian, was released last week. The last album Arctic is still one of the best albums released on a swedish label in my book.
Avian is something very special. The songs and sounds of this album just blew me off my feet, from first listen.
Thomas Jonsson’s voice is so in tune with the emotions in every note, it is uncanny almost. I can not remember ever having felt so privileged before, when listening to music. The feeling of darkness and light combined in lyrics and harmonies is so delicately balanced, it is sometimes hard to tell which is which.
This is really something huge. A singer songwriter of this caliber is very rare in this country of many great artists.
I’m Kingfisher has created something that every artist probably just dreams about, a follow up album that lives up and exceeds all expectations. A masterpiece. I am totally in awe. On my knees. This is a true Kentuckyseven-Seven! Thank you for making music mr Jonsson.
• Timothy Showalter makes his Strand of Oaks twirl our world around. Huge music for huge emotions. If you dig Phosphorescent, My Morning Jacket, The War on Drugs – you’ll dig this.
Check out devestating song JM from 2014-album Heal out on Dead Oceans.
• On this Election Day of Sweden we give ya’ll Elias Bjerstedt and his band Emmet. The band released their debut album This is Emmett’s new record and it’s an Americana arrow into the heart of any Buffalo.
This rings out from the porches of the Appalaches, twisted with the melancholy state of their hometown Malmö.
Elias Bjerstedt is a huge Dylan-fan, and aren’t we all. Cheers to Bob, and check out great tune Montana below. And vote against racism today folks!
• Shooter Jennings, the son of almighty Waylon, is one of our all-times favorite alt-country stars. This friday, we kick back with his song Rowdy Women from the 2006-album Electric Rodeo. Enjoy!
