One of our times greatest, is covered by the finest of finest. Justin Vernon and Bon Iver covers Dylan.
The song ”With God On Our Side from the album ”The Times They Are A Changing” one of my favorit albums, containing ”Ballad of Hollis Brown” and ”Boots of Spanish Leather”, was recorded live at a Portland show a week ago.
One of the greatest album released during 2009 was truly ”Lungs” from Florence + The Machine. Still have ”Howl” as of my absolute favorite songs ever made.
Florence Welch, is releasing her sophomore album, with the title ”Ceremonials” later this fall, october 31. The record is produced by Paul Epworth and will probably be as extraordinary as the debut.
I fell head over heels in love the last time. This time I already feel the butterflies awakening in my stomach.
Since we don’t wanna wait till late fall, we’ll take a look and a listen to the two tracks released so far…
Leslie Feist, the Canadian whom we have grown to love during the years is releasing her fourth album, Metals.
The release is set to October 4th, on Universal / Polydor in europe.
Her last album, The Reminder, was one of 2007′ best albums, and still holds a massive place in our world of great music. When James Blake covered her Limit To Your Love, we picked up the album again. This is the real deal.
I am sure that Feist will let no one down with her new stuff. Just listen to this, and you will be as assured as I am.
When we interviewed The Low Anthem earlier this year, they mentioned Brown Bird as something to listen in on. We did.
Brown Bird is David Lamb and Morganeve Swain. From Rhode Island, like so many other of the greatest bands that we have met. Their music is, as they put it themselves, ”best listened to in a room of wood”. Could not agree more.
It is Americana, the way it was intended. It makes you stomp your feet, nod your head and just close your eyes and dream of the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Their forthcoming full-length will be released october 18 by Supply & Demand. If you like long beards, beautiful voices, banjo and sweet sweet music, you wanna pick that one up.
You into heavy drugs as Starsailor, Cold War Kids, The Head And The Heart, The Avett Brothers? Well we are, and guess our delight when we found a new fav band from Nashville, Tennessee.
The Apache Relay is lead singer Michael Ford Jr and his bandmates who creates thrilling folkrock, it´s sturm und drang and a happy shore to be washed upon. Their sophomore album American Nomad is pure magic.
Eleven songs, one is the cover of the Springsteen-tune State Trooper from his everlasting Nebraska-album. Good taste, I´d say.
And don´t miss the title-track American Nomad. Beautiful Apachestuff.
For the last year, Oskar Linnros song ”Från Och Med Du” been a monstrous hit back in Sweden. Now the amazing Magnus Carlson, the guy who fronted Weeping Willows with all that power and carisma, done an english version.
And man he has made it into his own.
Oskar Linnros said it was ”way too good” and we agree. Mr Carlson and the Moon Ray Quintet took the inspiration of Curtis Mayfield and The Incredible Bongo Band, and I dare anyone to sit still while listening.
Please check out the fantastic, everlasting, singing-songwriting, Illinois-born, Nashville-based clawhammer banjo player Abigail Washburn.
It´s oldschool American music as we love @ Kentuckyseven, but it is also a new vibe. It´s folky enough to build a village, adding a Springsteen-magnitude making me huffin n´ a puffin.
Her album ’City of Refuge’ is out, don´t miss this astonishing bluegrassbeauty. Til then, check out the single ’Chains’.
You want something that itches? Something that will hit you hard in the belly? Something that won´t go away?
Try ’Times New Viking’. A great band from Columbus, Ohio with their own style, their own lo-fi-punk take on life.
For the first time the trio (guitarist Jared Phillips, drummer Adam Elliott and Beth Murphy on keyboards) has escaped into a studio, and the result is pure genius.
With the help of Adam Smith and Dustin White, ’Time New Viking’ produced and recorded an album that sounds like a mellow night out. It´s loud, brash and just lovely.
Their fifth album ’Dancer Equired’ is released April 25th via Wichita Recordings / Cooperative Music. Check out the song ’No Room To Live’.
One of 2010 best albums, came from this man. Thomas Jonsson, AKA I’m Kingfisher. The album, ”Arctic” was released by Playground Music, the harbour of great swedish music. I’m Kingfisher is one of the greatest in that crowd.
The man has toured with artists like Ed Harcourt, and has recorded stuff with artists such as Rosie Thomas (one of my all time favorites) Damien Jurado, Ned Oldham and other great acts.
He is currently on tour with Damien Jurado, and will be playing @ Pustervik (Woody West, again with the majestic bookings) and later in Malmö and Stockholm.
Thomas is a man with a plan, Arctic is just a part of a trilogy plan, and one can only imagine the great stuff that is coming our way. We’ll be waiting. Impatiently, but still.
Got a word with the awesome swedish singer-songwriter that is I’m Kingfisher…
What are you listening to right now?
– A lot of instrumental drone stuff. I just fell in love with Earth’s newest album ’Angels of darkness, demons of light I’. This year I think Earth, Mogwai, Tennis, Thomas Hine and James Blake have done really good stuff.
I’ve also recently listened a lot again to last year’s best album ”St Bartlett” of Damien Jurado, since I just got it on vinyl after our show in Copenhagen a couple of days ago. And oh, it has also been a lot of Efterklang’s newest.
Best book read during 2010?
– Der Ganze Weg by Kristin Berget, Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer, Fantasiön by Henrik Brandao Jönsson and Poetry of Birds (anthology)
Your hopes for this year?
That I will tour as much as I want while finishing the recordings of my next album, as well as an album with a new Swede-Swede-French collaboration project I’m a part of. That mink farming will be banned once and forever. That sound engineers on my shows from now on and forever will set my guitar sound as loud as I want without questioning me.
Three artists who inspire you?
Recently: Victoria Legrand, singer of Beach House.
For the Arctic album: Six Organs of Admittance. Forever: M Ward.
Who deserves a breakthru in 2011?
– Dear Euphoria, my favorite Swedish band, whose 2010 EP ”This Night will Flee” contains ”Rescue”, one of last year’s two best pop singles (together with Sleigh Bells’ ”Rill Rill”). It’s on Spotify!
I for one, is going to see I’m Kingfisher on sunday, and I know for a fact that you can still pick up some tix.
