Future History
Future History, an experimental, five-piece alternative rock band from Toronto, got their debut-LP ’Loss:/self’ out in the streets.
It´s a concept album, some of that FM-rock-vibe that makes me wanna get behind the wheels and keep driving til it gets pitch black. And then some.
Add a bit of Pink Floyd, the sprawling albums of Radiohead, and the sonic aesthetics of modern psychedelica. There you go.
Meet: Moon Duo
Moon Duo is a San Fran-band, formed back in 2009 by Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. Check out their space rock stuff filled with dreamy encounters. A psychotic circus without a doctor in sight. Insane perfection.
Their second full-lenght LP ’Circles’ is released Oct 1, via Souterrain Transmissions. The album is the product of a long winter isolation in the Rocky Mountains. All songs are written in Blue River, Colorado. The inspiration came from Ralph Waldo Emersons 1841 essay ’Circles’.
Have you met… Goodnight, Texas?
I am fully aware that I am a sucker for real grit-folk-americana-music. So this band really hit the spot. Hailing from both North Carolina and California, the two singer-songwriters Avi Vinocur and Patrick Dyer Wolf created ”Goodnight, Texas”, a band that makes music the way it was supposed to be like.
The music sounds exactly as I expected after seeing the album cover from their forthcoming debut ”A Long Life of Living” which will be released october 2. It is winding, real, filled with mandolins and banjos and simply amazing harmonies. If you are looking to find something real this fall. This is the album to look for.
Check out their sweet www.hiwearegoodnighttexashowareyou.com and take a listen to the first single of the album…
Ted Morris in the house
Kentuckyseven digs Ted Morris, a young swede who just released his second full lenght album ’It´s all about you and the rest’s about me’. Mr Morris makes big emotions fume all over this darling record. And his influences are plain down perfect: Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Damien Rice, Bright Eyes.
The press-release states: ”Ted Morris a white middle class guy in his upper twenties who writes heartbreaking songs about crashed relationships and hopeful songs about the rush of love. A little acoustic, you know. You’ve heard it before, maybe just not this good.”
Well, we tend to agree.
Meet: Lillian Todd Jones
Introducing Lillian Todd Jones, a 23 year old fire dancer from Dartmoor. A born storyteller with a bunch of great influences as Dolly Parton, Marc Bolan, Bob Dylan. Man, we like her.
Check out the song ’Butter Soul’. This is very, very intense. A song that sneaks up on you, a bit terrifying, yet drugs to our ears.
Shovels & Rope
When you need that genuine feeling of real folk-rock-country-cheap-beer-smelling magic, there are few bands that can provide like Shovels & Rope. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst play in the most honest hard driven and feet-stomping way.
It is impossible not to wander away to an imaginary bar in the sleazier part of town. Buy a Coors and start head-nodding. This is mean stuff. Just listen for yourself…
More from Shovels & Rope…
Have you met… The Young Romans?
The Young Romans, Brad Hooks and Saria Mellafe started their joint music venture in the spring of 2010. Their first EP ”Yesterday Night” was recorded and released in the fall of 2010. The L.A. duo released their sophomore album”Tiger Child” in march this year, and the titletrack from the album can be heard right here.
The band have become known for their haunting melodies, seamless harmonies and their infectious songs. And for good reasons I might add, the songs stick to you like superglue. I was hooked at first listen.
One of the songs from ”Tiger Child”, “Where You Go” is the end credit track in the anticipated Ewan McGregor / Emily Blunt movie “Salmon Fishing In The Yemen”.
Magical stuff. Listen.
Have you met…Jonas Schwartz
Shining like Shevy Smith…

A strong voice could make all the difference. And when the lyrics and music co-operates with it, it becomes a fairytale. Like in the case of Shevy Smith.
Shevy Smith sounds just like Emmylou Harris did on the albums from the early eighties. Smith grew up in Kansas and ended up in California after a career in Nashville. Her upcoming album ”Ad Astra” contains a wide variety of styles and feelings, but mostly a warm and great sensation of love for the music.
The single ”Shine” off the forthcoming album drips of country and that Californian sun. Take a listen.
